Across the healthcare industry, organizations are reimagining how patients access and share their health data. For Datavant, this work has long been a priority, and it aligns closely with the direction set by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Health Technology Ecosystem Interoperability Framework. Datavant is proud to be an early adopter Data Network within the ecosystem, building infrastructure to bring the framework to life.
Our mission has always been to connect the world’s health data securely and responsibly. As CMS advances interoperability industry-wide, Datavant helps bring those principles to life through technology that empowers patients, supports providers, and strengthens the networks that drive connected care.
“We’re building what we believe the industry needs to truly serve patients, providers, requesters, and partners,” said Andrea Kowalski, SVP of Provider Product at Datavant. “Patient access and interoperability are not separate goals; they’re two sides of the same mission.”

Empowering Patients Through Digital Access
At the heart of interoperability is a simple idea: patients should be able to access their medical records whenever and wherever they need them. Datavant’s Patient Request Tool makes that possible. Patients can securely request and receive their records quickly and easily. No fax machines, mailing delays, or portal login hurdles. With a 95% user satisfaction rate, the tool empowers individuals to access their data with ease, meeting them where they are: at home, at work, or on the go.
We continue to enhance patient experience, including exploring new identity and security integrations to streamline request verification while maintaining the highest standards of trust. The integrations would not only make record access faster and more secure, but also set the stage for the next evolution of seamless patient-initiated data sharing aligned with CMS’s framework.
Beyond health data access, tools like Datavant HealthForms help patients and providers simplify essential, yet often highly burdensome, administrative workflows that require access to health information, such as completing FMLA, disability, immunization, and other medical forms. Our goal is to create a seamless, consistent experience across all types of patient requests by digitizing workflows where possible, so patients spend less time on paperwork and more time focusing on what matters: their health.
Simplifying Provider Access and Collaboration
Patients aren’t the only ones who need easier access to information. Many providers continue to struggle with fragmented access to health information that slows care and drive up costs.
Datavant’s Provider Request Tool, RequesterAPI, and a new user-facing application slated for release in 2026, are designed to simplify any provider-initiated requests. Designed to address the challenges of a highly fragmented, siloed system, these tools allow providers to securely request and receive records from across Datavant’s nationwide network, reducing administrative burden, cutting turnaround times from weeks to days, and giving providers the data they need to make informed decisions sooner.
“Our goal is to eliminate the friction that slows care and creates administrative complexity,” said Andrea Kowalski. “By connecting health systems through standards-based APIs and trusted workflows, we’re making data flow as easily as care should.”
These initiatives reflect Datavant’s commitment to innovation built for real-world environments. Solutions designed to scale, integrate seamlessly with existing systems, and respect every privacy, security, and compliance requirement along the way.
Expanding the Network, Strengthening Trust
Interoperability depends on true connection. Through continuous network expansion and participation in national frameworks, Datavant increasingly extends its secure, standards-based exchange approach across more providers, payers, and other authorized stakeholders.
Every new network connection increases the value for patients, providers, and partners, bringing the industry closer to a future where health information is accessible, actionable, and built on a foundation of privacy-first considerations.
“Every time a record moves through our network, it represents a moment of trust between people,” said Alya Sulaiman, Chief Compliance & Privacy Officer and SVP of Regulatory Affairs at Datavant. “We’ve engineered our data collaboration platform to meet and exceed privacy and security expectations, not because we have to, but because we believe that’s what enduring trust requires.”
That commitment to privacy-by-design is central to every Datavant initiative.
Purpose, Policy, and the Road Ahead
While Datavant’s work naturally aligns with the criteria in CMS’s Interoperability Framework, our progress is driven by something deeper: an unwavering belief that patients, providers, and authorized partners deserve better access, better tools, and better outcomes.
We view interoperability not as a destination, but as a discipline. A commitment to continuous improvement, collaboration, and trust.
As we look ahead, our focus is clear:
- Empower patients to securely and transparently access their health data.
- Support providers with accurate, privacy-first controls over the information that drives care, operational efficiency, and financial performance.
- Expand networks that make data exchange more seamless and secure for all.
Datavant’s investments in digital Release of Information (ROI), patient, provider, and authorized requester access tools, and secure connectivity all reinforce one mission: being the data collaboration platform trusted for healthcare.
These advancements naturally align with the goals outlined in the CMS Interoperability Framework. Datavant is driving that vision forward, not just because regulation demands it, but because it reflects what we’ve always believed: that health data should be secure, accessible, and actionable.
“We share CMS’s vision for a truly interoperable healthcare system,” said Alya Sulaiman. “At Datavant, we’re designing our infrastructure to create value for patients and providers and recognize that the next frontier in interoperability depends on integrity at every step.”
